Why I’m excited to turn 18

Hey there!

Next month I’m going to turn 18 and I can’t wait, probably not for the reason you think.

I’m excited because I will be able to vote in the Irish Referendum for the legalisation of gay marriage.

This referendum is finally taking place on May the 22nd of this year, and if passed then Ireland can join the other countries that allow homosexuals to have the same right as the rest of us. I know I could do a big speech about why they deserve to have the same right, but really it’s as simple as this – love is love.

The idea that I can vote and possibly make a difference and change a law, that will go down in my country’s history excites me!

I don’t usually have any enthusiasm when it comes to politics, nor has it ever interested me that I could vote when I turned eighteen, but this is a subject I feel very strongly about. It has also caught my curiosity in politics and how using our vote can actually make a difference.

I discussed this with a friend recently and I was taken aback by her response – ‘but sure it’s obvious the vote will be passed, why wouldn’t it? So I’m not going to bother voting.’ If more and more people expressed that view then the referendum result sits firmly in the ‘no’ category. We can’t depend on others to get the result we want, we have to do something too if want to make a difference

What’s your opinion? If any of ye are from Ireland will you be coming out to vote? Has the vote been passed where you’re from, or is there plans for it to be passed?

I hope you all have a great Wednesday ! x
