Let me tell you a Secret


After a month at home in my sleepy, wintry little town, I made a trip up to Dublin before I head away next week, (did you know that I’m going away on Erasmus? Don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet..!) I’m heading home today, but at the moment I’m in my favourite little coffee shop in the Liberties, waiting for my friends to finish their lecture (so strange that I won’t be in class with them this semester!) before we go for lunch. But while I’m here, I thought I’d tell you about a secret I learnt in January.

“Have you read this book?”

My friend asked me as we strolled around Easons, picking up last minute Christmas presents. She held up a book called The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

“No, what’s it about?”

“It’s like a self help book, that basically tells you if you think positively, then the universe will make positive things happen.”

My ears pricked up at this. I’m a massive believer in positive thinking, but at some point last year I found myself not practising as consistently as I used to. It started when I found myself not spending my summer as I had planned and without realising it, I slowly went from being a glass half full kind of gal, to the type of person that found negativity in every situation.

I liked the sound of the book and since mom was struggling with what to get me for Christmas, I asked for The Secret as a present.  The book is super famous, so you might be familiar with it. Or if like me, you never heard of it before this and you are thinking of reading it, I’d advise to go into it with an open mind. I haven’t finished reading it yet, but I’ve been slowly making my way through it, picking it up every now and then before I fall asleep at night. I don’t connect with everything the book teaches, some of it can be quite airy fairy, but the general concept of positivity has really opened my eyes and I’d love to share it with you.

So here’s the thing, it was only after I started reading The Secret that I saw how much negativity I was letting into my life. I don’t usually appreciate self help books, but everything the book said made sense- your thoughts effect your life.

Think positive thought < positive results

Think negative thoughts < negative results

So a simple example is,

“I really hope it doesn’t rain” < negative

“It’s going to be a beautiful day” < positive

When I sat back and thought about it, I realised I was having pessimistic thoughts regularly, without intending for them to be negative.

“I’m not enjoying this”                     “I rather be doing something else

I’m going to be realistic, that probably won’t happen            “I have nothing to do today”


I decided to embrace The Secret and I took a page in my notebook, grabbed a few post it notes and on them I wrote what WILL happen this year. I’ve stuck them all over the page and keep adding to it whenever I have a new objective.

I honestly believe it’s making a difference. I had an interview earlier on in January for something very exciting and leading up to it, every time I thought of the phone call I told myself “you have this”, “it’s going to go great” and do you know what? It went the best it could have possibly gone!

You might call this luck, chance, or nothing to do with positive thinking but even so, thinking more positive thoughts can’t do any harm. If anything I’ve found it urges me to be more pro active. You also could be thinking that I’m talking a load of crap or wondering why I’ve spent 653 words telling you all about a Secret that just seems so obvious. But as a little experiment, count all the negative and positive thoughts you have in a day and see how you get on. If anything the book the concept has taught me to be more self aware about the thoughts I put in my head.

Anyway, there you have it, that’s my Secret to you.
